Call to regulate gambling elements in games

In recent years, gaming has become one of the fastest-growing activities among youth and adults alike. With the rise of popular titles like Mobile Legends, PUBG, Genshin Impact, CS2, and Epic Seven, gaming has transformed into a global phenomenon.

However, hidden beneath the surface of some of the games lies a dark truth that many are unaware of: gambling elements disguised as gameplay features.

Many games today incorporate mechanics such as gacha systems, random rewards, and loot boxes, where players spend real money for a chance to obtain rare items or characters.

These features are strikingly similar to traditional forms of gambling.

For example, players may purchase in-game currency and “spin” or “roll” for rewards, not knowing what they will receive.

This uncertainty, combined with the allure of obtaining exclusive rewards, creates a cycle of spending that mirrors the addictive nature of gambling.

Such practices raise significant concerns, particularly in Brunei, where strict measures are taken to safeguard moral and social values.

While many forms of entertainment are carefully regulated, there is an opportunity to further enhance oversight by addressing games containing gambling-like elements.

We urge the authorities to take a stand against games with gambling element and address this issue by raising awareness among parents and encouraging them to monitor their children’s gaming habits.

Regular checks on children’s devices can help identify games that may expose them to these harmful practices.

The time has come to prioritise everyone’s well-being by banning or regulating games that contain gambling-like features.

Let us protect the future generation from the hidden dangers of gambling in gaming and ensure a safe and healthy gaming environment for all.
