Call for hefty fine, imprisonment for tailgaters

I don’t understand the need for tailgating, especially when it’s 10.30pm on a weekday when there are hardly any cars on the highway.

I was heading home when a car was following dangerously close behind, forcing me to switch to the slow lane to get out of his way. He proceeded to doing the same to another car, and like me, decided it was not worth the stress of having someone tailgating him.

Wherever the tailgater was heading, was it worth endangering the lives of fellow motorists? Or are these tailgaters seeking some kind of perverse pleasure in seeing others bend to their will?

In my opinion, the understanding of road safety is sorely lacking in these irresponsible drivers.

While campaigns are good to remind law-abiding citizens of rules and regulations, I believe the only way to deter these people is through hefty fine and imprisonment.

Perhaps the authorities could consider opening a new hotline for road users to report dangerous driving.
