    Call for female role models in STEM careers

    Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) Assistant Chief Executive Asimah binti Haji Hassan acknowledged the need for female role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

    She said women in leadership positions are essential to young women to pursue careers in STEM.

    “This visibility helps break down stereotypes, boosts confidence and inspires ambition, showing young women that their aspirations in STEM are achievable,” she said.

    Asimah said female leaders in STEM encourages a more inclusive and diverse environment fostering innovation and creating a supportive network for future generations. She made these comments when AITI organised a motivational talk and a sharing session in conjunction with International Girls in ICT Day 2024.

    Over 70 students from Year 7 to Year 11 from government and private schools attended the event at Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja. The event also saw sharing sessions by ITPSS Sdn Bhd Blockchain Consultant Zara Laila binti Abdul Hadi and Studio Mushi founder and creative director Alia Alkaff. Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre’s Youth Empowerment Project Team also shared thoughts relating to ‘Inspiring Future Leaders through the Power of ICT’.

    AITI Manager Nurhayati binti Haji Mokim moderated the panel discussion on ‘Empowering Girls in STEM Leadership’. The event concluded with Asimah presenting prizes to winners of the digital arts competition. Nazifah Farwizah binti Jaliah won category one while Dayangku Damia Surhana binti Pengiran Haji Saiful Rizal and Dayangku Yasmeen Safiya binti Pengiran Md Hassan were first and second runners up. Dayangku Fitri Nur Batrisya binti Pengiran Wadood won category two while Dayangku Shasha Sahira binti Pengiran Mohd Sahrulluddin came second and Awliya Zahra binti Amirul settled for third place. – Azlan Othman
