Business owner fined for illegal telco usage

A business entity was fined BND700 for operating several multi-frequency band walkie-talkies without a valid licence, said the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) yesterday.

The agency said they issued a warning to the business owner infringing Section 9 of the Telecommunications Order 2001, where the multi-frequency band walkie-talkies being used are not type-approved to be operated in the Sultanate.

The agency said such offences are punishable under Section 35(1) of the Telecommunication Order, 2001.

Any person guilty of such infringements can be issued a compound fine of up to BND1,000 for each offence.

The agency reminded the public that unlicensed systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may disrupt day-to-day operations of agencies, service providers, institutions and businesses that rely on telecommunications.
