Buckle up, baby!

If you’ve ever worried that having a baby means saying goodbye to your travel adventures, think again!

While travelling with a baby can be challenging, it’s definitely doable and can even be incredibly rewarding.

With a bit of planning and flexibility, you can continue exploring the world with your little one in tow.

Many parents find that travelling with a baby opens up new ways to experience destinations, from seeing familiar places through fresh eyes to discovering baby-friendly activities and attractions.

So, pack up the diapers and the baby wipes, and get ready for an adventure like no other!

First things first, ensure your infant is okay to fly. If they are around six-seven months or younger, consult with your doctor to see if it’s safe for them to travel by plane.

If the doctor gives the go-ahead, the next step is to check if your baby needs a passport. This can be easily acquired by registering your infant and paying a certain fee.

As a parent, it’s important to get to know your child’s patterns and tendencies, especially when it comes to travelling.

If your child finds it challenging to stay still, which is crucial during travel, consider bringing along toys, their favourite bear, or snacks to make the journey more comfortable for them.

Carefully plan your trip and call ahead to see if the airline is infant-friendly. Make sure it’s easy for you to store and access your baby stroller before and after the flight.

Check if it’s easy to get hot water for your baby’s milk bottle.

Also, inquire about any extra precautions to ensure your child’s safety during the flight, such as an infant seat belt.

You can also ask if the airline provides bassinets for your child. If they do, it will provide much-needed space and a more comfortable plane ride.

Make sure you have everything you need in your carry-on bag or backpack and keep it nearby, such as under the chair in front of you.

You never know when your child will need a diaper change or their favourite toy. When travelling with your child, trying to pack minimally and not look like you’re camping which is definitely out of the question. Changes in air pressure during flight can also affect your child. My wife ordered a pair of noise-cancelling ear muffs for our daughter, but they ended up on the floor unused.

However, it’s good to know that infants cannot pop their ears, so the only alternative for clearing their ears is sucking on a bottle or pacifier.

When you’re on your flight, ask a flight attendant to inform you when the descent is about to begin.

Our child was fussy at first, but we held her close during takeoffs and landings.

Once you’ve landed, make sure nothing is left behind and ensure that your stroller is ready for you when you get off the plane. When everything on your checklist is complete, there’s one more thing to keep in mind.

No matter how prepared you are, things may not go perfectly, so it’s important to be patient and considerate, especially with your spouse. Maintaining a cool head is crucial; there’s no need to add fuel to the fire. It’s a team effort, and your first trip is everyone’s first trip.

Remember, you did it, and it will be much better the next time around. – ADIB NOOR
