The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), as the Secretariat of the Special Committee for the National Coordination of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), released the Brunei Darussalam SDGs Annual Report for 2021 which shares national progress in the implementation of the SDGs since the submission of the first Brunei Darussalam Voluntary National Review Report at the 2020 United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
The report, prepared in collaboration with members of the Special Committee on the National Coordination of SDGs, highlights national initiatives on focussed goals aligned with the theme of the HLPF in 2021 ‘Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development‘. Aligned with the principles of Building Back Better as agreed during the HLPF 2020, the report shares the efforts by the whole-of-nation approach in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the transition from the pandemic phase to the endemic phase guided by the National COVID-19 Recovery Framework.
To strengthen the SDGs agenda as a whole, several measures have been identified to be implemented such as exploring technical assistance, the establishment of the SDGs Technical Working Group, prioritisation of several SDGs, explore effective ways to mobilise resources, and a whole-of-society approach to enhancing the role of stakeholders including the private sector and non-governmental organisations in achieving the SDGs. In general, progress has been made to advance the SDGs in Brunei Darussalam. However, more concerted efforts are needed to ensure that the targets set in the SDGs are achieved.
