Brunei Darussalam’s proposal to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development (AJSTD) has been recognised and slated as a top priority for 2025, marking a significant step towards advancing academic analysis across ASEAN through AI technologies.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Info-communications Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof led the Brunei delegation.

At the 86th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI-86) and related meetings in Singapore from October 7-11, discussions centred on advancing ASEAN’s innovation and technological frameworks. Among the key agendas was the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026-2035, which sets a roadmap for regional innovation development.

ASEAN and Australian consultancy firm Australia for ASEAN Futures teamed up to identify a consultant to draft the APASTI, who has been tasked to define the COSTI aspirations for 2026-2030, in line with ASEAN Vision 2045. Also in discussion were the ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Fund (ASTIF) and proposals to expand financing for scientific initiatives across the region.

The meeting also saw the announcement of the winners of the 2024 Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women. Themed ‘Climate Resilience and Adaptation’, the award aims to honour female scientists who have made significant contributions to improving society sustainably through science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr Daphne Teck Ching Lai from the School of Digital Science at Universiti Brunei Darussalam won the Mid-Career Scientist category for her innovative application of data science and AI in climate resilience and adaptation research.

Dr Lai’s work includes AI-driven monitoring of peatland forests in Southeast Asia, water quality analysis, and the development of green energy solutions, which play a crucial role in managing sustainable resources and mitigating the impacts of climate change. – Fadley Faisal
