Bruneian, Indian artists show their colours

The Indian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam and the Telugu Association jointly organised a Kala Art Exhibition showcasing more than 80 paintings and artworks featuring Bruneian and Indian artists.

The exhibition allowed the artists to display their creativity and polish their talents while giving them an opportunity to share their works with the public.

The Kala Art Exhibition was also held to celebrate the 78th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relation between Brunei Darussalam and India.

Indian artist Ritu, a participant in the exhibition said she started to venture in art three years back, with her inspiration coming from her surroundings as well as her imagination, adding that some of her art is derived from places she has visited.

She added that some artwork can take more than four months to complete depending on the intricacy of the painting. Meanwhile, Punam Phalle said that her forte in painting was in realistic drawing. She said she loves intricate drawings, highlighting details such as eyes and features of the face and jewellery.

She added that focusing on realistic artwork is challenging due to the focus on recreating details such as colours and shadow of objects.

The artworks displayed during the exhibition featured different mediums such as oil, acrylics, water colours, gauche, and charcoal depicting a variety of genre from still life and portraiture to landscapes, wildlife, as well as the Indian art-motifs.
