A group of adventurous climbers, known as the Petualang Rimba Team, embarked on an exciting journey to conquer the highest peaks in Sumatra – Mount Kerinci and Mount Talang.

Led by Kassim Ibrahim and Aida Saidin, the team, comprising skilled climbers from Brunei, included Hajah Rose, Nabil, Michael, Lenny, Aida J, Pengiran Adi, Ali, Sall, Zahrah, Areef, Nabil, Nurul and Adib.

Their journey began at Mount Kerinci, the highest active volcano in Sumatra. After a challenging nine-hour trek through several basecamps, the team reached their final basecamp. However, due to heavy rain and strong winds, the scheduled 3.30am summit attempt was postponed to 4.30am. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the team persevered and reached the 3,805-metre summit at 6am. The descent was equally challenging, as they faced a fierce storm on their way down.

The team then moved on to Mount Talang in Solok, West Sumatra. Although the 2,597-metre mountain’s six-hour trail was less demanding, the extreme weather conditions forced the team to postpone their 5am summit attempt to 9am. The trail, filled with large boulders and battered by heavy rain and storms, presented significant challenges.

Nevertheless, through perseverance, the Petualang Rimba Team conquered the peak of Mount Talang.

“Climbing Mount Kerinci and Mount Talang is a physical and mental challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” said Aida Saidin. She added that this achievement is a source of pride for the nation and an inspiration for aspiring mountaineers. – Lyna Mohamad
