Brunei Darussalam’s waters are free from red tide, the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism stated after monitoring the waters following a statement from Sabah’s Fisheries Department on February 18 that red tide has been detected on the west coast of Sabah.
The department will continue to monitor the situation and update the public from time to time. As a precautionary measure, the public is reminded not to consume shellfish from Sabah or from an unknown origin.
The public is also urged to remove the gills, stomachs and internal organs of the fish before cooking.
Fishermen can contact 2770066 if they encounter any changes in the colour of water or find large numbers of dead fish along the Sultanate’s coastal waters and beaches.
The public can access www.fisheries.gov.bn for more information.
