Brunei Wasps to play Macau in AFC playoff round

Brunei Darussalam national football team will have the chance to rewrite the history books when they face Macau in the play-off round of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup 2027 qualification.

The Wasps will begin the first leg of the two-legged tie at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas either on September 5 or 6 and travel to Macau, China for the second leg on September 10.

In a step closer towards qualifying for the Asian Cup finals, the play-off matches also include Sri Lanka taking on Cambodia and Timor-Leste meeting Mongolia.

The six nations chosen to participate in the playoffs round are the sixth lowest ranked losing teams from the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition and the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Preliminary Joint Competition round one.

The winning playoff teams will join Bhutan, Maldives and Laos, the three best ranked losing teams from the Preliminary Joint Qualification round one alongside the 18 teams who finished third and fourth in their respective groups in round two, in the qualifiers final round.

The qualifiers final round will be played for six match days starting from March 25, 2025 and culminating on March 31, 2026.

The top ranked team in each of the six groups of four will qualify for a place in the AFC Asian Cup finals in 2027.

The playoff round matches were announced during an official draw held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last Thursday.

AFC Deputy Director of Competitions and Football Events Division Avazbek Berdikulov conducted the draw.

The national team will look to build on momentum from their historic 3-2 victory against Vanuatu during the FIFA Series last March. – Fadhil Yunus
