An exhibition showcasing photos to commemorate 40 years of bilateral ties between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom (UK) opened at the Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja yesterday.
The exhibition, organised by the British High Commission in Brunei Darussalam, illustrates the history shared between the two countries, highlighting milestone moments.
British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam John Virgoe launched the exhibition, and in his welcoming remarks said, “The exhibition is the second leg of our celebration. In March, we hosted a 40th anniversary iftar dinner in the UK with Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof and Foreign Office Minister Benyon, and we launched a book to commemorate our diplomatic relation.”
He added, “The relationship between our two countries is a long standing one, firmly rooted in our cultural ties, our shared legal system, our strong collaboration on defence and education, the warm relationships between our royal families and of course, the close bonds between our people.”
The high commissioner, who will be leaving the Sultanate next month, said, “I am nearly at the end of our posting to Brunei. Reflecting on my four years here, we have achieved a lot together. It has been a great privilege to attend not one, not two, but three royal weddings.”
He added, “We are about to have the first free trade agreement between Brunei and the UK, though our shared membership in the comprehensive and progressive agreement for trans-pacific partnership. This will lead to opportunities to grow our trade and economic ties. We’ve also deepened our cooperation on climate change, economic diversification, maritime issues, health and education. ”
Following the launch, the high commissioner and the guest of honour Permanent Secretary (Politics and International Organisations) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pengiran Norhashimah binti Pengiran Mohd Hassan toured the exhibition.
The free exhibition is open to the public until July 16. – James Kon
