Brunei to experience active weather this week

Brunei Darussalam is currently in its intermonsoon period, which is expected to last until the end of November, entering the northeast monsoon. During this transitional period, local winds significantly influence daily weather patterns, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) in a statement y on the forecasts from yesterday until October 18.

Scattered showers are expected, with some intensifying into heavy thunderstorms.

“These storms are likely to hit inland areas first during the late afternoon and may then spread towards coastal and sea areas at night, potentially lingering into the early morning.

Wind gusts may reach up to 45 kilometres per hour during these heavier showers.

“Sea conditions over Brunei waters are currently calm, remaining below one metre,” it said.

However, the BDMD predicts a rise in sea state, particularly offshore. From October 16 to 18, moderate to rough seas ranging from one to 2.5 metres are expected. The BDMD urged the public to exercise caution due to the anticipated active weather.

“The combination of heavy rain and high tide could lead to flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas, flood-prone zones and near riverbanks. Strong winds accompanying the storms may cause fallen trees, flying debris and even landslides,” it said.
