The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is looking to address the issue of food supply chain in the country.

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, at the daily press conference yesterday, said the global community is currently facing a food shortage.

To ensure the country’s welfare, the government is looking to set up a food bank, to supply food items through government linked companies and compete in prices with other products that are available locally, as well as procure other brands that might be cheaper than what is already available on the market.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew also revealed that a government-linked company’s food processing facility has been completed in Kampong Salambigar, and it will soon be able to supply canned food to the local market.

The minister said, “I hope it will be able to address the rising prices issue in products at the moment”.

Discussions with international suppliers for some products that are in short supply are also underway, he said.
