Brunei team finish sixth in Davis Cup qualifiers

The Brunei Darussalam national men’s tennis team finished sixth overall out of 13 entrants during the 2023 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group V at the Polytechnic University in Isa Town, Bahrain recently.

The national team finished second in Pool ‘D’ behind group winner Laos having won once and lost twice in the four-member group.

Brunei ended their stint in the international stage with a 2-1 loss to Bahrain in the fifth to sixth place playoff.

The Brunei team comprised Aiman Abdullah, Timothy Lim, Chung Peng Lim, Gavin Yeung Kok Lim, Awangku Ahmad Dasuqi bin Pengiran Haji Sulaiman and Billy Wong as team captain.

Brunei’s sole victory in the group stage came against Macau when they defeated them 2-1 through a singles match from Aiman and a doubles match involving Aiman and Timothy Lim.

Aiman beat his Macau opponent Fong Chi Hei Austin 6-1, 6-2 before the tie was decided in the third game after Aiman and Timothy paired up to beat Ioi Tou Cheong and Ng Long Hei 7-6, 6-3.

Brunei tennis player Aiman also won all four of his singles matches including against Tajikistan, Laos and Bahrain.

The top team from each of the four groups advanced to the promotional playoff, with the winning teams in the playoff earning promotion. – Fadhil Yunus
