“As a nation, we have to take care of our environment and our natural heritage. In recent years, we have been taking bold steps in addressing the pressing issues of climate change, deforestation and the depletion of our natural resources,” said Acting Director of Forestry at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism Hajah Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim in her speech at a tree planting event at the Jalan Menteri Besar Recreational Park yesterday.
The event was held in conjunction with the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam’s (PPPBD) 70th anniversary as part of their ‘Share Learn Grow’ international programme.
She added, “Recognising the essential role of trees and forests, the government has undertaken programmes to increase forest cover, enhance biodiversity, conserve the existing forest areas and promote sustainable land.”
Hajah Noralinda also said, “Tree planting is a form of dedication to creating a more resilient ecosystem as trees are silent warriors battling climate change, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, providing habitat for countless species, providing clean water for everyone and preventing soil erosion. As such, our tree planting is an investment for future generations to come.”
She added, “The tree planting activity, although small, would have an impact beyond our national boundaries. We should be proud as we will be contributing to the attainment of one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).”
Some 70 saplings were planted during the activity, and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam was present to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
This year’s ‘Share Learn Grow’ programme is engaging around 210 participants from nine countries to foster cooperation and collaboration, support SDG agendas, encourage inter-generational cooperation and better understanding of the Sultanate. The programme concludes tomorrow. – Azlan Othman
