Brunei Darussalam and South Korea explored collaborative efforts to address public transport challenges in the Sultanate during a bilateral meeting between Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha and South Korea’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) Sangwoo Park.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the World Smart City Expo 2024 from September 3-5 in Goyang, South Korea, focused on exchanging views and sharing best practices to advance smart transportation management.
Among the discussions were policy frameworks, legislation, capacity building and strategies for improving transport efficiency and sustainability. The technologies showcased at the expo presented viable solutions that could be adapted for Brunei’s smart transport system project.
Brunei Ambassador to South Korea Pengiran Hajah Nooriyah binti Pengiran Lela Wijaya Pengiran Haji Yussof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof and senior officials from both Brunei and the embassy were also present.
In addition to the meeting, the MTIC officials visited the World Smart City Expo at KINTEX 1 in Goyang, the Goyang Smart Safety Centre and the Seoul Transport Operation and Information Service (TOPIS) facility, gaining insights into smart transportation solutions, with a focus on policy frameworks and technology-driven strategies for sustainable urban mobility.
The permanent secretary also attended the 2nd Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting, aimed to enhance cooperation under the memorandum of understanding on smart city development between Brunei and South Korea. The meeting, attended by South Korea’s Deputy Minister for Territorial and Urban Policy of South Korea Lee Sangjoo, focused on expanding joint initiatives on smart city development. Brunei was presented with a token of appreciation from South Korea, reflecting the enduring cooperation in fostering smart city growth and to recognise the strong partnership between the two nations. – James Kon
