Brunei sees surge in COVID, ILI cases

The Sultanate is currently experiencing a rise in both influenza-like illness (ILI) and COVID-19 infections, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement yesterday.

There are currently eight COVID-19 patients requiring respiratory assistance and close medical supervision.

Most cases can be attributed to the Omicron variant and its sub-variants. There is also a seasonal increase in ILI cases, the ministry said.

It was also noted that the immunity acquired through vaccination is declining and thus, higher chances for individuals to be re-infected with the SARS-CoV-2.

The MoH called on the public to uphold social responsibility by practising good personal hygiene, following proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, wearing face masks when experiencing flu symptoms.

The ministry also underlined the importance of flu and COVID-19 vaccinations for high-risk groups, such as senior citizens, individuals with chronic diseases and pregnant women.

Individuals experiencing prolonged symptoms or worsening conditions are also urged to seek immediate medical attention.

It is also mandatory for those visiting hospitals and clinics to wear face masks.

Those who had their COVID-19 vaccinations more than six months ago or was last infected with COVID-19 more than six months ago are also encouraged to get a booster to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. – James Kon
