Despite the challenges brought about by the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, and the second wave of the outbreak in August last year, Brunei Darussalam recorded a positive increase in 2021 compared to 2020.

The gross output value of the major resources sector as a whole in 2021 recorded a significant rise over the achievement in 2020 – an increase of about 25 per cent – from BND651 million in 2020 to BND814 million in 2021.

The positive growth of gross output value of the major resources sector was highlighted by Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong during a Muzakarah session between the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) and Legislative Council members yesterday.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali also contributed the positive growth to initiatives and projects carried out by MPRT as well as support from all parties, especially entrepreneurs, farmers, ranchers and fishermen.

The minister shared that the increase, in general, is contributed by a significant increase in output in two main industries under the MPRT namely agriculture and agrifood industry.

There is an increase of 23.5 per cent from BND471 million in 2020 to BND582 million in 2021, while the fisheries industry shows an increase of 36.7 per cent from BND139 millions in 2020 to BND191 million in 2021.
