Brunei recognised for role in rural development, poverty eradication

The Sultanate shined at the 5th Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (5th ASEAN RDPE) Leadership Awards held virtually from the Philippines yesterday.

Perbadanan Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (Perbadanan TAIB) topped the private sector category while the Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT) received the nod in non-governmental organisation (NGO) category.

The event, themed ‘Accelerating Recovery and Strengthening Resiliency of ASEAN for Sustainable Rural Development and Poverty Eradication’, was attended by ASEAN ministries responsible for rural development affairs and poverty eradication. Permanent Secretary (Community and Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari led the Brunei delegation at the event.

Perbadanan TAIB was represented by its Managing Director Datin Hajah Hasnah binti Haji Ibrahim to receive the award, while SCOT was represented by its Chairman Anwar bin Haji Mohammad.

Acting Temburong District Officer Pengiran Muhammad Ameer Mubarak bin Pengiran Haji Hashim as the representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), and other senior officials from the MCYS were also present.

The ceremony is a biennial activity carried out by the Senior Officials Meeting for Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (SOMRDPE) with the objective of recognising the role, achievements and contributions of non-governmental organisations and private sector in rural development and poverty reduction in local communities.
