A Bruneian drag race participant tragically passed away on Saturday afternoon, following an accident during the Sandakan Drag Battle R3 2024 at the Sandakan Turf Club Circuit in Sabah, Malaysia.
The victim, identified as Abang Adib Abang Ali, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Duchess of Kent Hospital.
According to Malaysian news reports, Acting Sandakan District Police Chief Superintendent K Ramasamy said initial investigations revealed that the vehicle driven by the victim lost control and veered off to the left of the race circuit after crossing the finish line.
“The victim was trapped in the vehicle he was driving and was extricated by the fire department. He sustained serious injuries and was sent to the hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at 5.25pm,” he said in a statement.
He added in a statement on Sunday that the victim’s body is currently in the hospital’s forensic unit awaiting an autopsy.
The case is being investigated and classified as a sudden death report.
The Sandakan Drag Battle R3 2024 has been cancelled, according to the RCO Motorsport Club.
