The Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan hosted the 29th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) from September 29 to October 2, attracting470 prosecutors and legal experts from 95 countries to discuss the critical role of prosecutors in upholding the rule of law and enhancing the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
The Brunei delegation, led by Attorney General and Public Prosecutor Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohammed Taib, participated in the four-day event.
The theme of this year’s conference, ‘The Role of the Prosecutor in Upholding the Rule of Law’, focused on significant issues such as transparency, accountability, and data protection, particularly regarding digital evidence and the utilisation of artificial intelligence.
Key topics discussed during the conference included the prosecution of domestic and gender-based violence, economic crime, and asset recovery.
The attorney general also met with Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Dr Kamran Aliyev to address various legal issues of mutual concern, emphasising the need for international collaboration in strengthening the rule of law.
Established in June 1995 at the United Nations Office in Vienna, the IAP is a vital global organisation comprising over 183 organisational members from more than 177 countries.
It plays a crucial role in promoting the rule of law, enhancing professional conduct standards for prosecutors, and improving international cooperation in combating crime. – Fadley Faisal
