Brunei powerlifters shine in Sarawak meet

Brunei Darussalam’s powerlifting athletes under the Powerlifting Federation Brunei Darussalam (PFBD) shone in the international arena after recording numerous top-three finishes at the recently-held Sarawak Powerlifting Open 2022 at the Aeon Mall in Kuching, Sarawak.

Abdul Malik Al-Mukkaramah bin Haji Mohd Yusof emerged champion in the under-74-kilogramme (kg) category after recording 95.25 points in the overall highest men’s GL open category and also the heaviest deadlift of 295kg.

Brunei’s female athlete Khairunnadya binti Sannay won the under-57kg category after recording 77.77 points in the overall highest women’s GL open category.

Haziq Aidil bin Jeferi completed the trio of gold medallists following his heroics in the under-83kg junior event.

Meanwhile, Abdul Haziq bin Abdul Hamid claimed the silver medal in the under-59kg junior category and Awang Nur Adlan Al Ashraf bin Awang Azlan winning bronze in the under-83 men’s open category.

All five athletes also came from the Vertics Gym based in Lumut, Kuala Belait.

The event was also sanctioned by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).

Some 60 participants competed in the event.
