Brunei OCR athlete secures third place in Labuan meet

Brunei Darussalam leading obstacle course racing competitor Mohd Hasnal Husna bin Ahmad secured third place in the Coastal Ninja Warrior Challenge 2024 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex in Labuan, Malaysia recently.

The national athlete, who clocked a time of 1:42.11s, said, “Alhamdulillah, I felt immediate relief after reaching the finish line.” My teammates and I struggled with the pegboard obstacle because we didn’t have access to one for practice.”

The Ultimate Pegboard obstacle required contestants to climb sideways to reach the other end of the board, covering 20 feet long distance.

“Although we conditioned and strengthened ourselves for it, executing the movement efficiently was challenging,” he added.

He was proud to representing Brunei and the Brunei Association of Running and Adventure (BARA) and committed to improve for upcoming events.

Selangor’s Mohd Redha Roslan won the open category in 59 seconds, while Ramadan Mahani sealed the runners-up spot with a time of 1:33:84.

The Brunei team also featured Low Leng May and Gabrielle Chin, who finished 16th and 20th respectively, as the sole female participants in a predominantly male event.

Leng May said, “The obstacles were challenging, pushing us to new levels. Competing abroad allows us to learn new techniques and improve our race strategies.”

She added, “Despite the intimidating atmosphere, both women excelled, surpassing some strong male competitors.”

Gabrielle, who competes for the first time in an open category said, “Being part of the competition reminded me of the importance of starting somewhere and has motivated me to work harder.”

Meanwhile, BARA President Yasmin Patera said, “The decision to send our national athletes to this competition was driven by our commitment to showcasing their talent on an international platform.”

The other national athletes include Azizil Mosli and Izzat Murad, who finished sixth and 13th place, respectively.  – Fadhil Yunus
