Brunei national swimmers leave for world meet in Japan

Three national swimmers left the country yesterday to take part in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships at the Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan which will be held until July 30.

The national team comprises male swimmers Joel Ling and Zeke Chan as well as female swimmer Hayley Wong, accompanied by National Head Coach Wu Na and Manager Linda Lai.

The Brunei team will begin their campaign this Sunday with Hayley registered in the 100-metre butterfly before returning to the pool for the 100-metre freestyle event next Thursday.

It will be Hayley’s second appearance in the world meet following her participation in Budapest, Hungary last year.

Zeke and Joel will be making their debut in the World Aquatics Championships.

Zeke will take part in the 100-metre backstroke and 100-metre freestyle events while Joel will compete in the 200-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle events.

The national swimming team has also been scheduled to take part in the Commonwealth Youth Games which will be held next month in Trinidad and Tobago.

The national trio will also be joined by Sharmeen Md Mharvin in the Commonwealth Youth Games. – Fadhil Yunus
