Brunei marks Autism Awareness Day with charity run

The Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei, organised the Anak Adalah Anugerah or Every Child is a Gift Charity Run at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital yesterday.

The charity run commemorating World Autism Awareness Day, was themed ‘Transforming the narrative: Contributions at home, at work, in the arts, and in policymaking,’ to raise awareness about individuals with autism.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Ja’afar and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad attended the event.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi officiated the charity run and awarded prizes to the run’s participants.

The charity run served to raise awareness about various learning needs in schools and collect funds for SMARTER Brunei, Tabung IKHLAS and the Special Education Fund. During the event, participants engaged in a range of activities such as Zumba, a treasure hunt, face painting and kick the ball.

The event concluded with Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi presenting a mock cheque for BND19,886.58 to President of SMARTER Brunei Pengiran Zamri bin Pengiran Haji Bujang. – Rokiah Mahmud
