Brunei-Malaysia judicial lecture series fosters continued legal learning

Some 50 participants joined the inaugural Brunei-Malaysia Judicial Lecture Series on March 12, with a lecture on the topic General Principles of Judgement Writing.

The event was a collaborative effort between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and the Federal Court of Malaysia, following the signing of the Memorandum of Judicial Cooperation between the two judiciaries in March last year.

Acting Chief Registrar Hajah Hazarena binti POKSJ DP Haji Hurairah emphasised the strong ties between the two judiciaries in her welcoming remarks, highlighting how the partnership “fosters mutual learning and strengthens the administration of justice”.

The lecture provided insights into effective judgement writing. The first presentation, ‘Effective Judgement Writing in Criminal Cases’, was delivered by Judicial Commissioner Haji Abdullah Soefri bin POKSM DSP Haji Abidin.

Justice Haji Abdullah Soefri discussed how effective judgement writing ensures clarity, structure, transparency and objectivity, ultimately helping parties understand decisions while maintaining public trust.

The second presentation on Issue-Based Judgement Writing in Civil Cases’ was delivered by Datuk Vazeer Alam bin Mudin Meera, Judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia. Justice Vazeer introduced ‘The Raymond Method’ a seven-step framework that uses a structured and issues-based approach. – Fadley Faisal
