Brunei Darussalam’s national football team marked their return in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup (AMEC 2022) with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Thailand at the KLFA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last night.
The national football team defended valiantly and withstood attacking turbulence from the mighty Thais for the most parts of the period.
Thailand midfielder Bordin Phala opened the scoring in the 19th minute before the country’s star striker Teerasil Dangda doubled his side’s lead a minute before the end of the first half.
Brunei had managed to keep resolute despite the more favoured Thais dominating the tie with a barrage of attacks and having a lion share of the possession.
Nevertheless, the War Elephants found a third through an own goal from the returning Awangku Yura Indera Putera two minutes before the end of normal time.
Thailand substitute Peeradol Chamrasamee added the gloss to the win with a brace in injury time.
Brunei made their first appearance in the competition for the first time in 26 years following their qualification to the tournament with victory over Timor Leste in a two-legged match.
The Wasps’ next match will be against Philippines at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila this Friday.
Meanwhile in the other Group ‘A’ match, Cambodia edged Philippines 3-2.
