Brunei Darussalam football team concluded their campaign in Group ‘A’ of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup (AMEC 2022) with a 5-1 defeat to Cambodia at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh yesterday.
The Wasps grabbed the lead in the 21st minute after Nurikhwan Othman headed home after reacting from a corner.
However, Cambodia drew level in the 31st minute after Choun Chanchav planted a firm header home following a wonderful assist by Tes Sambath.
The Angkor Warriors snatched the lead as Nick Taylor tucked in a cool penalty in the 50th minute.
The hosts were awarded a penalty for a second time as forward Keo Sokpheng sent the Brunei Darussalam goalkeeper Haimie anak Nyaring the wrong way.
Cambodia forward Lim Pisoth opened his international account for the senior team after a good work on the flanks led to a fine low-footed finish. The Phnom Penh Crown startlet added a brace two minutes from time after driving home a classy finish having taken out the Brunei defence with silky touches.
The national football team – who were making an appearance in the competition proper for the first time in 26 years – ended the group stage without a point after four games.
Elsewhere, Thailand and Indonesia shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
