Brunei futsal team ready for AFC qualifiers

The Brunei Darussalam national futsal team arrived in Manama, Bahrain on Wednesday to take part in the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Asian Cup 2024 qualification starting tomorrow.

Third Secretary at the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Manama Haji Roslan bin Pehin Datu Indera Sugara Dato Haji Johari greeted the Brunei delegation at the Bahrain International Airport.

The national futsal team, who have been drawn in Group ‘F’, will be based at the Swiss-Belhotel, Seef Manama.

Brunei will begin their campaign against 44th-ranked Kuwait at the Khalifa Sports City Hall tomorrow followed by a meeting against designated group hosts Bahrain two days later.

The Wasps will conclude their group stage against regional rivals Timor-Leste on October 11.

Brunei last clash against teams not affiliated by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) was during the 2008 edition of the qualifiers.Besides Indonesia whom are a regular fixture in the AFF tournaments, Brunei also met Qatar, Kuwait and Macau in the group stage at the Panasonic Sports Complex (Matsushita Centre) in Shah Alam, Malaysia.

Then, Brunei slipped to a respectable 2-0 loss to Qatar following a Gholam first-half double and were narrowly edged 1-0 by Macau through a solitary strike from Chong Kun Kan.

The team were also put through their paces during a training session as part of their final preparations before they begin their qualifying campaign.

The national futsal team will be under the guidance of newly-appointed head coach Wahyu Triyanto. – Fadhil Yunus
