Brunei Darussalam star Azwan Ali Rahman inspired his country to a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka following his second match-winning goal in as many days in an international friendly match at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.
The national team made a significant milestone after securing a third consecutive victory for the first time in their history.
Brunei’s progress was further demonstrated after keeping a clean sheet back-to-back for the first time.
Brunei team captain Azwan Ali Rahman also took a giant step towards achieving the all-time goalscoring feat with his seventh international goal.
The DPMM FC man trails the country’s leading goal-scorer by one who is currently held by Shahrazen Said with eight goals.
The visitors were not able to deal with Brunei’s corner delivered by Mohammad Hakeme Yazid bin Said as Azwan Ali Rahman gleefully accepted a loose ball and directed the ball into the net.
With Sri Lanka looking to get back into the tie, midfielder Dillon Senan De Silva reprised his role as chief tormenter and swung in a low cross into the box which was met by Wade Darren Dekker.
However, his teammate could not get enough purchase to his shot as Brunei goalkeeper Muhammad Haimie bin Abdullah Nyaring calmly gathered the ball into his arms. – Fadhil Yunus
