The Sultanate is currently at the end of the inter-monsoon period where local wind effects play an important role in governing the country’s daily weather, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) yesterday.
The BDMD recorded a total rainfall of 251.6 millimetres (mm), where the rainfall reached 78 per cent of the normal value of rainfall for November (1991-2020) at 322.9mm.
The estimated total rainfall accumulation recorded across all four districts are, Brunei-Muara District at 27.6mm, Temburong District at 51.5mm, Tutong District at 55.1mm and Belait District at 31.7mm.
Based on data from the Brunei Darussalam Doppler Weather Surveillance Radar System, the heavy rainfall on November 23 concentrated in all four districts causing flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. At the same time, the occurrence of high tide resulted in the flood situations over areas near river banks.
The agency said the unsettling weather condition is expected to continue until Tuesday, based on the latest numerical weather prediction model for the country. Occasional heavy and thundery showers are expected, especially in the afternoon and evening, and may continue until early morning.
“However, rainfall intensity is not the same from one area to another and also from day to day. Wind gust may reach up to 45 kilometres per hour during or near heavy and thundery showers,“ it said. ”Over Brunei waters, sea state is generally at moderate, between one and 1.5 metres.”
The agency also said there is a high risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood-prone areas as well as near river banks during continuous heavy rain and high tide.
The risks of landslides and fallen trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition.
The sea state is dangerous to all small boat operations, sea recreational activities and sports.
The public, road users and fishermen are advised to stay up-to-date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the BDMD, and to take action to ensure safety.
