Fifteen local artists are showcasing their art works in the Gurisan Subarang exhibition at the Galeri Azman Hashim, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Sabah, Malaysia.
Curtains were officially raised during a launch event officiated by Sabah Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Haji Mohd Arifin bin Datuk Haji Mohd Arif on February 3. The exhibition will conclude on March 8.
The local artists participating in the event are: Dato Haini Hashim, Malek Metarsat, Awang Sitai, Kassim Ismail, Pengiran Timbang, Adi Zain, Zakaria Omar, Zakaria Hamid, Pengiran Kamarol Zaman, Pengiran Wahab bin Hassan, Osman Mohammad, Dato Shofry, Haji Padzil, Pengiran Roslan and Haji Dayang.
Gurisan Subarang derives from a Bruneian word goresan, which means ‘from abroad’ while Subarang is a commonly used word for ‘nearby neighbours’. The word subarang can also mean ‘visible from the sight’ and it also brings the connotation of ‘close distance or far but close to mind’.
The artists said they are sharing their experiences with the world through their art and “consciously or not, every art piece has its own story as each piece goes through various techniques and thoughts,” they added.
With more than 80 art pieces on display at the exhibition, which is a collaboration between Creative Space and Galeri Azman Hashim, the objective is to introduce Bruneian art to the neighbouring Malaysian state of Sabah. – Lyna Mohamad
