Brunei and India elevate ties with Modi’s visit

Brunei Darussalam and India have officially elevated their relationship to an “Enhanced Partnership” during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first official visit to Brunei. The visit, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, marks a new chapter in their longstanding friendship.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah during a luncheon in the prime minister’s honour, highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations and acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian community in Brunei to the country’s socio-economic development.

His Majesty emphasised the importance of looking towards the future with optimism and strengthening cooperation in areas such as connectivity, energy, education, and health. His Majesty also expressed Brunei’s commitment to expanding collaboration into new sectors, including ICT, renewable energy, agriculture, and the halal industry.

“Today marks the elevation of our relations to an ‘Enhanced Partnership,’ which promises a deeper partnership and will contribute to more significant regional growth and stability,” His Majesty stated.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Brunei in various sectors, including economic, scientific, strategic, FinTech, cyber security, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and health.

The two leaders discussed potential long-term cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in LNG, and explored possibilities for defense industry collaboration, training, and capacity building. They also agreed on cooperation in the space sector, including satellite development, remote sensing, and training. Additionally, plans to enhance connectivity between the two countries were discussed, with the announcement of direct flights to commence soon.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed his appreciation for the positive contributions of the Indian community in Brunei and acknowledged the support of His Majesty and the Brunei government in ensuring their welfare. He highlighted Brunei’s importance in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision, reaffirming India’s support for ASEAN Centrality and freedom of navigation under international laws like UNCLOS.

As the two nations embark on this new chapter of their historical ties, both leaders expressed their commitment to building a brighter future for their people through continued collaboration and mutual respect.
