Bru-Lions SC emerged champions in the team event of the Squash Championship in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 75th birthday celebration after defeating Power Squashers 3-1 at the National Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex recently.
The team event, which was held throughout last week in the two-long championship, also saw Mata-Mata finish in third place.
The individual events had already been completed since the commencement of the tournament on June 13. The tournament had been re-scheduled since last July due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lim Kok Sheng won the men’s open category after beating rising prospect Alexander Yong who finished as runners-up while Fauzi Zaini took third place.
In the women’s open category, Hamidah Ismail emerged champion with Sofia Yasmin taking up the runners-up spot, while Christina Esther took third place.
Meanwhile in the men’s Division I category, Dominic Wong won the men’s Division I title with William Thacker and Haji Jamaluddin settling for runners-up and third place, respectively.
The junior event witnessed Alex Thacker being crowned champion with Adrian Kocsis sealing a runner-up finish, and Richard Zou in third place.
Permanent Secretary (Strategy and Policy Management) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan presented prizes to the winners. Organised by the Brunei Squash Rackets Association (BSRA), the tournament attracted 60 individuals and eight teams.
The tournament also marked the resumption of squash-related activities since restrictions on organising competitions were lifted at the start of the month.
