Over 20 bags of trash were collected during a beach cleaning campaign organised by the British Forces Brunei (BFB) along the Belait District on Thursday.
The campaign was part of ‘The Global Charge’ which is a wider United Kingdom (UK) Defence initiative to raise awareness of sustainability and conservation issues, and the need to leave a better legacy.
It also represents one of 134 similar activities planned across 21 countries on the same day.
The campaign held in Brunei was organised and led by Major Dave Walker.
“We all want to protect the natural world for our children to enjoy, but we are also seeing the effect of climate change and the potential for the military to respond to support displaced communities and deliver humanitarian relief,” said Major Walker.
“There is a moral and operational imperative for the military to consider its impact upon the environment.”
Numerous initiatives were raised including minimising the requirement for single-use plastics across its estate, departments and activities, provision of a recycling service, carpooling and walk-to-work initiatives.
All of these are taken forward and will continue the positive trajectory of environmental consideration set by the event.
The event proceeded with with the beach cleaning by the officers and their families, where they cleared the 500-metre stretch of beach adjacent to the Officer’s Mess Hall along Jalan Maulana. – Daniel Lim
