Lawn Bowls Competition male youth category winner Mohd Shamizan Azmee bin Mohd Khairul Syawal Azmee said that he was surprised by his performance and result in the competition as he had just started lawn bowling earlier this week with encouragement from his teacher.
“I was not expecting to achieve first place in the tournament, but Alhamdulillah I managed to compete to the best of my ability and win the tournament,” he said.
He also added that he hopes to nurture his new-found passion for the sport as he looks forward to competing more in the future.
Fifty-eight contestants from across the Belait District competed in the Lawn Bowls Competition held as part of the district’s Community Sports Event at the Mumong Sports Complex.
Sixteen competed in the open male category, while the Youth category was split into two, with 27 competing in the male category, while 16 competed in the female category. Assistant Belait District Officer Mohamad Yassin bin Haji Ahmed witnessed the finals and took part in a short lawn bowl match to officiate the event.
Meanwhile, Nur Quratul Aini Layinah binti Azmi won the youth female category followed by Adryana Delyia binti Khairul and Chung Lin Ern in second and third.
While Mohd Shamizan Azmee won the youth male category, Awangku Mohd Haiqal Asnawi bin Pengiran Haji Zainal came second and Ahmad Danish bin Haji Amirhalim third.
Bahrin bin Emran won the male open category followed by Haji Ahmadi bin Hassim and Ishak bin Bakar.
The event was organised by the Belait District Branch of the Youth and Sports Department together with the Belait District Office in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 77th birthday. – Daniel Lim
