Jerudong International School (JIS) and the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam on Tuesday hosted a book donation ceremony and Chinese calligraphy lecture at the JIS Arts Centre Foyer, as part of the Book Week 2024 activities at JIS.

Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo and Counsellor Wang Haitao participated along with members of the embassy.

A key moment during the event was Ambassador Xiao presenting 162 books covering Chinese literature, art, science and technology, economy and culture to Principal Nicholas Sheehan

In a reciprocal gesture, JIS presented a token of appreciation – a poster of Chinese work and cultural posters by students studying Chinese in Year 7 to 13, showcasing their dedication to learning the Chinese language and culture.

The event then turned to the art of Chinese calligraphy, with Liu Xingchen from the Chinese Embassy delivering a lecture.

Ambassador Xiao and Counsellor Wang Haitao showcased their calligraphy skills, followed by a session involving students and embassy staff.

The ambassador also presented some of his calligraphy work to the teachers and students of the Chinese Department at JIS.

Some 36 Year 11 to Year 13 Chinese IGCSE and IB students and teachers, along with key figures from JIS, including Vice Principal Dr Daniel Milner and Head of Asian Languages Melhan Adam were also present.
