The Magistrate’s Court slapped a 32-year-old local woman with a BND36,300 fine for possessing smuggled cigarettes yesterday.
Norashimah binti Ismail pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing 33 cartons and 48 packets of undeclared cigarettes, along with BND463 cash believed to be proceeds from sales of the contraband.
The defendant would have to serve 14 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
The Customs prosecutor informed Senior Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof that the officers found the contraband and cash at her residence in STKRJ Kampong Lambak Kiri at 3.25pm on April 7.
The court ordered the items and cash to be forfeited to the state.
