A 37-year-old local was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to settle a BND17,000 fine after pleading guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Mohamad Yusri bin Suhaili would have to serve 13 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman heard from the customs prosecutor that enforcement officers discovered the defendant having in possession 17 cartons and a packet of undeclared cigarettes at his residence in RPN Kampong Telisai, Tutong District during a raid at 2.42pm on August 27, 2022.
The court also ordered the cigarettes forfeited and destroyed.
