The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a local man to settle a BND15,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Mohd Hasbullah bin Abu Bakar, 32, would have to serve 13 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni heard from the customs prosecutor that the defendant was caught carrying 13 cartons and 13 packets of a variety brand of smuggled cigarettes in his vehicle parked in Batu Bersurat on November 14, 2021 at 2.40pm.
Customs preventive officers acted on a tip-off and while inspecting the defendant’s vehicle, unearthed the bootleg.
The court also ordered for the seized cigarettes to be destroyed.
