The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a local to settle a BND130,600 fine for having in possession 20,704 sticks of cigarettes.
Omar @ Yaakub bin Radang, 61, would have to serve 21 months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to possession of cigarettes with import duty worth BND13,052.
The Customs prosecutor informed Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni that the defendant was found in possession of the cigarettes at a house in RPN Kampong Rimba at 1.30pm on January 18, 2022 during an inspection conducted by Customs preventive officers.
Officers also found BND27.50 and BND662 in cash believed to be proceeds from sale of the cigarettes.
The court ordered the cash forfeited and the cigarettes destroyed.
