A 20-year-old Malaysian was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to settle a BND12,400 fine yesterday after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Chung Ka Chai would have to serve a year’s jail in default of payment of the fine.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the prosecutor that customs preventive officers discovered the defendant bringing 16 cartons of undeclared cigarettes in his vehicle during routine inspection at the arrival bay of the Sungai Tujoh Control Post on June 13 at 8.35pm.
The court also ordered the cigarettes forfeited and destroyed.
Meanwhile, prosecutors charged 37-year-old local Andre Asnnaf Daneil Abdullah Sianong for possessing over four kilogrammes (kg) of methylamphetamine in the High Court on June 12.
The charge was filed after Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner found sufficient evidence produced by Prosecutors Shamshuddin bin Haji Kamaluddin and Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid.
The defendant was found possessing 4.08kg of methylamphetamine in crystal form weighing 4.9kg inside a vehicle at Bebuloh Police Control Post at 3.10pm on December 27, 2020.
The court ordered the defendant to be committed to a High Court trial.
