The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a local man to settle a BND102,500 fine for possessing a sizeable amount of smuggled cigarettes.
Zakeria bin Haji Abdul Latip, 43, would have to serve 19 months’ jail in default of payment.
Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the customs prosecutor that the defendant was found keeping 129 cartons, 19 packets and 12 sticks of cigarettes at a house in Jalan Jaya Negara, Kuala Belait when customs preventive officers conducted an inspection at 4.55pm on June 15, 2022.
The court ordered the seized cigarettes to be destroyed.
