Five hundred saplings of seven tree species were planted at the Berakas Forest Reserve Recreational Park last Tuesday. The species are Selangan Daun Tebal, Meranti Laru, Meranti Merah Kesumba, Kandis, Meranti Siput Jantan and Cassia Fitsula.
Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw and High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam Dato’ Raja Reza bin Raja Zaib Shah led the sapling planting in a 1,125-square-metre space.
Over 70 participants from the Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam; Malaysian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam; Forestry Department; Department of Environment, Park and Recreation (JASTRe); PETRONAS Carigali Brunei Ltd (PCBL) and its consortium partners; as well as students from the Petronas School of Life programme joined the activity.
Conducted by PCBL, the event was carried out in conjunction with the company’s annual Environmental Day celebration and in support of the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) Strategy to increase the country’s carbon sink through afforestation and reforestation programmes which target the planting of 500,000 new trees by 2035.
PCBL Country Head Mohd Johan Ariff bin Mohd Supian said the annual reforestation initiative is one of PCBL’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) effort to ensure the conservation of biodiversity, aligned with Petronas’ Sustainability Agenda on safeguarding the environment.
“Since 2017, we have planted more than 2,000 trees in collaboration with numerous local non-governmental organisations (NGOs),” he added.
