Belait students learn balanced approach to sugar consumption

Some 83 students from St James’ School in Kuala Belait participated in a talk on the importance of a healthy and balanced sugar intake as part of an ongoing roadshow campaign, which began at the school yesterday.

The campaign, led by SWEET Smart – a group of six third-year medical students from the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) at the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam (UBD), featured a talk focused on healthy sugar intake for adolescents.

The group’s assistant head Noor Yasirah Husna binti Haji Mohamad Yura Faizal said the campaign aims to educate the younger generation, particularly school students, on sugar consumption.

“Topics covered in our talk include the daily limit for sugar consumption, identifying hidden sugars in nutrition labels and the adverse health effects of excessive sugar intake,” she added.

Noor Yasirah also shared that the campaign is the initial phase of their collaboration with the school.

The group also plans to set up a booth at the school’s open day event tomorrow to provide further information on sugar’s impact on health. – Daniel Lim
