As the nation celebrates the 40th National Day with a grand assembly at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas today, religious authorities said the people should be grateful that the country is blessed and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Imams in the Friday sermon said the theme for this year’s celebration ‘Bersatu Mencapai Cita Negara’ provides a comprehensive view of the national spirit, independence and national development aspirations.

Imams also highlighted the importance of cooperation with a whole-of-nation approach.

Touching on the country’s proclamation of independence 40 years ago, imams said the uniqueness of such proclamation of independence is the three chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’ which echoed around Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital.

“Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the nation upholds the sanctity of Islam. Living religiously will continue to be inculcated among the people in the country by enhancing awareness on Islam in terms of belief and law.”

“The Muslim community will continue to be protected, especially in shielding them from influences against the religion that drag them to ignorance and negligence,” said imams.

Imams also said efforts are being made including the aspiration of a Zikir nation.

“Echoing our independence with Zikir dictates a nation that upholds Islam. To attain success and outcome that we wish for, we should not forget to remember Allah the Almighty by instilling faith in our heart through Zikir,” said the imams.

“The importance of remembering Allah the Almighty, coupled with a positive attitude to enjoy peace and harmony in living in a community will assist in achieving the nation’s aspirations under the guidance of Allah the Almighty.

Zikir is the best weapon which may improve a person’s personality. Those who always practice Zikir will be safe. The heart of one who performs Zikir will always be calm.

“We hope that the nation is able to compete with other nations in progress and development, able to face challenges brought about by globalisation by intensifying Islamic teachings in life and approach,” the imams said.  – Azlan Othman
