Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Rover Scout Crew 1102 recently hosted its 5th Basic Day Camp.
Fifteen UNISSA rover scouts participated in the camp to continuously increase leadership and scout skills at National Scouts Training and Activity Centre, Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association in Gadong.
During the one-day basic camp practical training, rover scouts learnt the importance of teamwork as well as how to set up a tent, make scout crafts, read maps and compass, start a fire using wood, grill bread rolls and cook rice in a drink box, use and care for sharp tools, knot and lash, cook lunch in groups and do community work.
Leading the training session were UNISSA’s rover scout leader trainer, who is also National Training Commissioner, Zainudin bin Haji Ishak, Temburong District Scout Commissioner Jurkarnain bin Hussin, scout leader Rakob bin Nasir, Assistant Scout Commissioner in Brunei-Muara District Ritchie bin Siabu and Assistant Scout Commissioner Ronnie bin Siabu in the Temburong District.
For rover scouts, the membership runs from the age of 18 to 26 for students at higher education institutions, colleges or youth groups.
The World Rover Scout Section is an important division in World Organization of the Scout Movement and was established 104 years ago in Brownsea Island, England. The division founder, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powel, wrote a book, Rovering To Success, which is used as a guide to build character and personality as a rover scout.
Before joining the camp, UNISSA rover scouts trained under the supervision of 1102 UNISSA Rover Scout Crew Leader Dr Muhammad Alif bin Haji Sismat who carried out leadership training and weekly skills training for six months for new members to gain the World Scout membership badge. – James Kon
