“By working together, we can make a significant impact on the health of our oceans and the well-being of our communities,” said Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Chief Marketing Officer Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar yesterday.
She said this as BIBD capped its involvement in Ocean Week Brunei, held in conjunction with World Ocean Day 2024.
She added that “their efforts in marine conservation and community engagement reflect the bank’s core values and dedication to creating a sustainable future for Brunei”.
The initiatives carried out by the bank included youth forums, conferences, reef ball fabrication, coral planting and a clean-up campaign, which brought together businesses, government agencies, organisations and schools to address marine conservation challenges and solutions.
The bank’s involvement included the deployment of 20 reef balls and a beach cleanup campaign at Meragang Beach joined by 70 BIBD staff last Sunday.
The reef ball deployment aimed to support sustainable fishing practices and create new fishing zones for local fishing communities to boost economic activities within the local fishing industry.
BIBD’s investment in the reef ball project also aimed to support the Brunei Reef Wall project which fosters local expertise by providing training in reef ball creation.
The initiatives underscore BIBD’s dedication to enhancing marine biodiversity and supporting the local community, and also directly contributes to BIBD Projek Alam Mampan, a comprehensive initiative addressing various aspects of environmental sustainability, on both land and water, aligning with Brunei Vision 2035 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. – Lyna Mohamad
