Bank nears green initiative goal

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) planted 30 saplings at Taman Jubli Emas Maulana in Kuala Belait on Thursday, underscoring the bank’s ongoing commitment to the ‘660 Roots to a Greener Future’ initiative as part of the broader Projek Alam Mampan.

Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad, the guest of honour, was joined by BIBD Chief Marketing Officer Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar and staff members.

The initiative, designed to plant 660 trees across Brunei by the end of 2024, aligns with BIBD’s Sustainability Framework and supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Previous major sapling planting event by BIBD was at Sungai Penyatang in the Tutong District, where 300 saplings were planted.

With the planting of 40 saplings at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, 260 in Berakas Forest Reserve, 300 in Tutong District, and 30 in Kuala Belait making the total of 630 saplings planted so far, the project is on track to meet its target of 660 by the end of this year.

The remaining saplings are set to be planted in the Temburong District.

The Projek Alam Mampan will expand to include marine conservation initiatives such as BIBD’s Reef Ball Programme and mangrove restoration projects aimed at enhancing marine habitats.

Since its inception, the Reef Ball Programme has deployed over 100 reef balls and facilitated the planting of more than 500 corals, underscoring BIBD’s commitment to preserving Brunei’s rich marine biodiversity.

BIBD emphasised that the initiatives are crucial for fostering a sustainable and livable environment for future generations and the ‘660 Roots to a Greener Future’ initiative not only addresses pressing environmental concerns but also integrates environmental, social, and governance principles into BIBD’s operations.

The bank, through these comprehensive efforts, reaffirms its role as a responsible corporate citizen dedicated to creating a greener and more sustainable future for Brunei, aligning closely with both national objectives and global sustainability targets. – Lyna Mohammad
